Selling Avon, the Highs and Lows We Face

I posted the following in my Beauty Connetions blog, and I felt like it might be a great reminder of the highs and lows we face as Avon Representatives:

Earning income with Avon is a performance based system, just like many direct sales or work from home jobs. The harder you work, the more you sell, the higher percentage you will earn off the sales you make. To maximize you Avon income potential, you should work to make money in 3 different ways. Sell Avon in person- face to face, handing out catalogs and colleting orders. Sell Avon online- Avon provides you with your very own eRep Avon website, and Avon gives you tools to promote your site, plus you can use your own social media to promote. Become a member of the Avon Leadership program- recruit your own Avon team, help them learn to sell, promote and grow their own teams, and you earn as they grow.

When you become an Avon representative, you are starting your own business. Running your own business can be tough, it can be a lot of work, but you can be successful with your own business! And with Avon, when you go into business by yourself, you are not alone. You have a company standing behind you that wants to see you succeed, and they help you by providing training and success tools! Your success is up to you! What are the positive and negatives of selling Avon?

There are positives and negatives in all career choices. The most successful Avon representatives do not let the negatives hold them back. In fact, successful Avon representatives will see a negative and use the opportunity to research, reach out to the Avon network of representatives (there are many Avon rep groups on Facebook,) overcome the negative, and use the experience to help others. With all the pros and cons of selling Avon, many representative find success running their own Avon business. Of course I love Avon, and I could go on and on about the positives, but let’s go ahead and start with the negatives- because I would rather end on a good note!

Cons of Selling Avon

Negative of selling Avon– this is a tough business and you have to work hard. Many people love to buy Avon products, and Avon offers an array of products for skin care, beauty, fashion, home, children and more. So, selling isn’t necessarily tough, but you do have to work. It takes time and dedication, it takes quality customer service, it takes responding to questions and concerns, it takes learning, and it takes the scary task of presenting yourself to others- the courage to reach out to finding new customers, and introducing yourself to others, and reaching out for help when you need it. You can be a successful Avon representative from the start, but you have to be willing to keep working and keep growing.
Negative of selling Avon- you will see competition. You may live in an area with many local Avon representatives, and you may come across potential customers that already have an Avon representative. Avon representatives should be willing to allow their fellow representatives to grow and prosper, but some competitors are fierce and not always willing to play nice. Negative of selling Avon- there are good times and there are bad times. As with most things in life, your work, your family, your friends, your car, your home; It is not all sunshine and roses! Feeling pessimistic, facing hard times, questioning your abilities- these are not things that define you. It is how you react and respond that defines you. All business owners, unsuccessful and successful, face these unfavorable moments. Choosing to power through, choosing to succeed is not easy, but it is mandatory to become a successful Avon representative.

There you have it- some of the most fundamental cons of selling Avon. In many reviews of selling Avon, you many hear someone complain about their leadership, or their upline, or other more specific frustrations, but really, those are difficulties and the reviews they share show the response they have had to those difficulties. Your biggest obstacle is yourself, and how you choose to handle your situations, how you chose to find another route to your success when you feel like you’ve been thrown a “bad” curve ball.

Pros of Selling Avon

Like I said, I love selling Avon, and I could list positives on and on. I focused on the basics of the cons, so I will focus on the basic of the pros as well.

Positive of selling Avon- Avon offers a low start-up cost. The cost to start your Avon business is only $15! Plus, with your $15 investment, you will receive a free starter kit with products, tools and training. Many direct sales companies have large start up costs and/or require you to purchase either a starter kit. With Avon, you get your free starter kit, and you can make the choice to upgrade to a larger starter kit.
Positive of selling Avon- There is a large community of Avon representatives on social media. Most of these groups are positive and motivating, and want to help you reach your dreams! When you do reach out, you will be surprised at the support you can find. Regardless of your upline, your local district manager, your local Avon team; there is an Avon family out there, and they are happy to include you. Just reach out! Do not be afraid to reach out to the most successful Avon representatives you hear or read about! I feel so fortunate to have made connections to millionaire Avon representatives, and you can too!
Positive of selling Avon- The Avon earnings chart! When you sell Avon, you will earn 0-50% commissions on each order. For example, maybe you have a low selling campaign (a campaign lasts for 2 weeks) and you only earn 30% for that campaign. The very next campaign, you push harder, sell more, and earn a higher commission. You could jump your earnings from 30% up to 50% in just two weeks!
Positive of selling Avon- The President’s Recognition Club! This club has several rewards for attaining, but my favorite reward? Once you reach the sales level to join, you begin to earn a guaranteed 40% on all your sales! (Exception, fixed earning items, items sold by, but not produced by Avon.) The sales level to join this club is $10,000 in award sales. Once you reach that, you will have your commission guaranteed from the time you reach the goal, and ALL of the following sales year! Plus, once you have reached that level, it is easy to attain because you have learned to sell at that level.

Your success in your Avon business is in your hands. Avon is not a get rich quick opportunity. It is the opportunity to be your own boss, and create your own income. I have been fortunate in my Avon business, and I have put a lot of time and effort into creating my business what it is today. I have connected with great people, learned to handle obstacles on a professional and personal level, earned great rewards, awards and prizes, and gained a confidence I did not know I could attain.

How does Avon work?

How does Avon work?

Avon representatives have one Campaign every 2 weeks. During each Campaign, the Avon representative will collect orders from customers to submit on the representative’s submit date. All orders are submitted at once for the best shipping price. The total of all orders will determine what will be due to Avon based on the Avon pay chart (Avon Earnings Chart.) A representative will earn 20-50% from customer sales based on the Avon pay scale.

Once the full set of orders is submitted to Avon, the Representative will receive an estimated amount due to Avon right away. This is only an estimated amount, and may be adjusted based on sale prices, taxes, product availability, and other adjustments. The following day, Avon will have posted the Representative invoice that has been adjusted and will show the actual amount due to Avon.

The Avon representative invoice will group products based on earnings levels (if there are different levels,) demonstration products, and business tools. Each group will list the product, product number, quantity, price (brochure price,) total price (brochure price times quantity,) and your cost. The total price is the price that the Avon representative charges the customer, and the your cost listed is how much the Avon representative pays Avon. The difference between the price and your cost is the earnings the Avon representative has made from the sale.

How Avon works, the quick and general overview:

Avon customer orders product from Avon representative.
Avon representative orders requested products from Avon.
Avon charges the Avon representative a cost based on sales for the current campaign.
Avon representative pays Avon the representative cost.
Avon representative receives products from Avon, and delivers to customer.
Avon representative charges Avon customer brochure price.
Avon brochure price is higher than Avon representative cost. (As long as total of sale for the campaign are $50 or higher.)
Avon representative has earned money from receiving the brochure price from the customer price, and only paying Avon the representative cost.
Avon does not send money to the representative because the representative pays representative cost, and the difference in the representative cost and the brochure price is the representative’s earnings.

Keep this in mind when sending returns to Avon. Avon will credit the Avon representative the representative cost, not the brochure price.

How does Avon pay representatives?

Avon allows representatives to earn in different ways. An Avon representative can earn buy selling Avon products to customers and selling Avon products online, or by starting Avon leadership and building an Avon team. We will discuss earning from Avon leadership in another post, but let’s take a look at how Avon representative payment works on Avon sales.

When an Avon representative sells Avon products, Avon does not send the representative any compensation because the earnings are received by the representative directly through the customer transaction. (As explained above.)

Selling Avon online is free and easy with your Avon representative online store. Avon allows each representative their own online store with a unique URL so your customer orders will count towards your Avon sales for the current campaign. With the online store, a customer orders from Avon, pays Avon, and receives the product from Avon. The Avon representative does not need to be involved with the transaction, but will still receive the sales awards, and the earnings (as explained on the yourAvon.com website for representatives.)

After a representative as received an online order, typically 2-4 business days, the representative will receive a credit on their representative Avon account. On the due day for the representative to submit customer orders to Avon, the representative cost for the submitted orders (by the representative's offline customers) will be adjusted for the online and offline total sales for the campaign. The following day, the Avon representative invoice will show the earnings from the online sales have been deducted from the amount due by the representative, and the representative will have less to pay Avon because of the credit from online sales, or may not need to pay at all!

If the online Avon sales credit is higher than the Avon representative cost for the campaign order, the representative will not owe Avon…instead Avon will owe the representative. If the credit is more than $15, Avon will send the representative a check in the amount of the credit. (The representative may also sign up for direct deposit, and the amount will deposit direct to the representative’s bank of choice.) If the credit is less than $15, the credit will roll-over to the following campaign.

Avon selling tips: Network! Connect to get inspired and be inspiring!

Building your own business is not easy to do. With Avon, you are responsible for your success, but you are not alone! There are many networking groups created by Avon top leaders- and they are happy to help YOU! It is not easy to stay motivated and positive, but if you surround yourself with positive, and actively participate in a positive way, you might be surprised by the results. Hearing success stories motivates me to work harder, and there are always new ideas to pick up and try. I enjoy trying new techniques with my business, and I strive to find not just what works, but what works for ME! I look for techniques that help me grow as an entrepreneur, a marketer, a sales person, a leader, and as a person. I have learned so much from connecting with Avon leadership, and highly recommend getting involved. What could it hurt?

Molly has a reputation for having a big personally with big hair – straight-forward, likable, and positive! Do not be negative or disrespectful, this group is supportive and looks for solutions, and you will be “POOFED” off the page if you are not following the rules! No question is too big or too small, and this is a well-established group of motivated reps.
Monday Morning Madness - if you are an Avon rep and you do not know who Lisa Wilber is…look up Lisa Wilber! Creator of The Winner in You, Lisa is a MILLIONARE Avon rep who has been in the business since 1981. This group discusses all things direct sales and network marketing, and Lisa is one of the best in all of direct sales, not just Avon! No whining allowed in this group! Lisa knows how to work hard to earn, and have fun doing it, and she is a wealth of knowledge.
MontAVON Climbers - Linda Marie Hoekel Montavon created this group for a place for all Avon reps to share photos, promotions, events, tips, inspiration to provide guidance and support for a growing and lucrative Avon home based business. Anyone can share ideas and advice.

These are my starting suggestions, and I highly recommend looking up the Avon leaders that are in the Avon books View from the Top.
